$21 Weekly Food Challenge - Final Day

May 2nd 2010 10:57
We did it, we crossed the finish line, we made it to the top, we reached the end....and any other imagery pics you can think of.

We had our final day of the challenge today and we've come away with spending only $19.

Hubby didn't get that bottle of milk, but bought some vegetables for our last dish which was pea and ham soup, made with a ham bone that has been frozen in our freezer since Christmas.

Hubby bought a bag of carrots, an onion and some celery to complete the dish, coming to $6.80. That makes a total of $19.00 spent for the week.

And to finish where the game began, we took the soup and a dessert around to our friends who surprised us with the first meal of the challenge.

The dessert was a bit of a jag. When I was doing the inventory of the pantry I found 2 boxes of gelatine in there and wondered what to do with them. Along with that was a tin of pineapple and we also had four eggs left.

When I went to check some recipes I found one for Pineapple Fluff which consisted of 3 egg yolks creamed with 3/4 cup of sugar. A sachet of gelatine is dissolved in 3/4 cup warm water which is then added to the egg and sugar mix.

Add a tin of pineapple then add in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Put in the fridge until set. Then serve.

This has been a really fun challenge and I think we will do it again. One thing I wanted to point out for those who know we have a cafe, I made sure that any food taken from there had a monetary value on it that counted towards the $21 (eg. the bottle of milk we brought home). Other than that the second day of the challenge we got some ham and rissoles that had been bought before the challenge and needed to be used up before going off. (They were still ok to eat, we didn't want to risk selling them to the public.)

So this challenge has been good for our shop too, as it has saved us buying stock that we would have taken home to use. A good example of that is hubby would often cook the kids doughnuts as an afternoon treat. Instead, I had baked cupcakes for the week from the pantry, so the doughnut mix at the shop didn't get touched. Luckily, the kids didn't mind..LOL.

People's reactions have been interesting to our doing the challenge. From the genuinely inspired to the narrow-minded naysayer. But both extremes are to be expected when trying something different.

If you've read all these posts then thank you for your time and I hope you enjoyed them. If you feel so inspired please feel free to let me know how you go.

I just stumbled on to this blog this evening so I haven't read the other posts, but I'm very impressed.

Kudos to you for even attempting this challenge, and even more for finishing it up in grand style - bravo!
