Calm before the storm!
December 26th 2008 06:05
It was lovely to wake up the last two mornings and not worry about the shop needing to be open...mind you, two little boys got us up nice and early for Christmas morning.
However, this is the calm before the storm. Every summer holidays, floods and tropical storms excluded, our little town trebles in population due to all the tourists wanting to also enjoy our beaches, rivers and bushes.
Unfortunately, last year we didn't enjoy the storm of tourists as we hoped because of major flooding in Northern NSW. Apparently the worst in 30 years and our first Christmas open for business.
This year, we hope for good weather. So far we haven't been let down with gorgeous days behind us and the promise of more for the rest of summer.
This will help all the small businesses in town to earn a 'buffer' for the winter. Kind of like the squirrel storing its nuts for the lean times. Fixed costs such as rent and utilities can be covered, as well as price rises in our stock.
So while we are run off our feet feeding the hordes, we can enjoy our sore muscles at the end of the day knowing we have provided for our family for the rest of the year. It's a good feeling!
