Cockroach Bread
May 14th 2009 00:38
Recently in our local paper it was reported that a local bakery had sold a loaf of bread with a cockroach in it. This happened back in November/December last year but they have recenlty been 'named and shamed' on the NSW Food Authority website that lists all food places that have been fined for not so hygienic food practices.
Every six months the local council sends around a food inspector, which the local business has to pay for, to ensure that all standards are being met in the way of food preparation, handling and serving.
I'm happy to say that our little shop has always passed with flying colours but it obviously wasn't the case for the bakery recently reported on. I feel for them in one sense, as it is so easy to have cockroaches breeding near food and one poor buggar was obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time, to the detriment of the sales of the shop. Small businesses struggle as it is.
However, I do believe that food standards are so important when serving the public. I've fallen foul of food poisoning from dodgy shops and it isn't a great experience! As a food operation we have a duty of care to those who are trusting us when we sell them food.
In our little town, to help reduce costs to local businesses, a few of us get together to call in the pest guy who goes through a number of shops at one time. This ensures no nasty surprises for the customer and the shop owner.
Hopefully, incidences of cockroach bread become a rarity in the future. The website to check out your local area is www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au
