Irresistable Gluten Free Show

November 16th 2010 05:49
It seems all the top gluten free foodies are Sydney bound.
Australia’s biggest gluten free food show is set to hit Sydney on 20-21 November when the Irresistible Gluten Free Show is in town.

The show is a veritable food Mecca for anyone with coeliac disease, food intolerances or just looking for a bit of a culinary health kick.

There will be gluten free recipes, gluten free products, shopping tips and more – all designed to make living with gluten intolerance as simple and appetising as possible.

One in 100 Australians has coeliac disease alone today so it’s also a subject area where myths and old wives tales abound, making it hard for people to sort the facts from fiction.

To help set the record straight – and put good taste back into healthy food - Australia’s leading gluten free experts will be joining forces at the Irresistible Gluten Free Show.

Tickets to the show are free to anyone who registers online at www.glutenfreefoodshow.com.au or $10 at the door. The show is open daily from 10am to 5pm at the Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT GLUTEN AND COELIAC DISEASE

1. Coeliac disease is one of the most under-diagnosed, yet most common chronic diseases. It affects approximately 1 in 100 people in Australia but 75% people don't know they have it.

2. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Following a gluten-free diet is the only long-term treatment for people with coeliac disease.

3. Gluten can be used in unexpected ways such as a thickener in ice-cream or flavour in biscuits, as well as in cosmetics.

4. Grains and starches that do not contain gluten include corn, rice, potato, buckwheat, millet, tapioca and quinoa.

5. Symptoms of coeliac disease are extremely variable and may occur singularly or in combination. Some of the most common ones are:

- Fatigue, weakness and lethargy

- Diarrhoea or constipation

- Cramping and bloating

- Nausea and vomiting

- Anaemia

- Flatulence and abdominal distension
