Mind Your Own Business!

No, I'm not being rude or telling you that you're a sticky beak. I thought I'd write a post on the business side of running our little shop.
When we started up our cafe/takeaway shop nearly two years ago I started keeping a record of all our spending and sales in an excel spreadsheet. Not being a book-keeper or accountant by trade it seemed the easiest and most expedient way to go about looking after the books.
After getting a whopping bill from the accountant last financial year, I realised that I probably need to do a bit of stream-lining of how our accounts are kept. You see, I've since learnt that the accountant will charge according to the amount of work they have to do to get your accounts into the format that they require, be that in the form of MYOB or Quickbooks or any other form.
A very good friend of mine, who IS an accountant by trade sat down with me and showed me the ropes with MYOB and I have to say, it is a breeze to use. Now that I know how to use it. Where doing the wages on Sunday night could take up to an hour to do with my excel spreadsheet, that has now been cut down to less than 10 minutes.
Also, I'm hoping the biggest win will be when we hand our books to the accountant, already in the format that he requires and our bill will be at least halved.
