Seat Stealer and Yuppie Hater
September 12th 2009 07:28
One of the biggest problems we have with our al fresco area is when people who buy food from other shops sit in our seats.
Not such a big deal in the quieter times but a real issue when we are busy and our own customers are unable to sit down and enjoy a meal because all the tables are taken by non-customers.
We pay council for the privilege to have those chairs and tables out there so it becomes an annoyance when our customers are disadvantaged in that way.
We try to resolve the issue in the busy times by putting out signs saying that only our customers can eat there, or we have asked people to move on as well.
Recently a gentleman came into the shop and explained that he had bought some food from somewhere else, but would it be ok if he sat at one of our tables. I explained that since there were a number of tables free that it would be no problem and thanked him for asking.
Our conversation must have triggered a memory for him because he decided that yuppies were the worst people on earth and he had been tempted to run a couple over the other day.
The senior and I looked at each other and decided it was better to get on the good side of this non-customer than not, and when he offered to mop our floor as thanks for letting him eat at one of our tables, we happily declined.
We felt that letting him sit and eat may save a yuppie somewhere in the world!
